Wizz Air opens base at London Luton – also adds routes from Košice and Riga.
Wizz Air opened its first UK base at London Luton this week. The carrier now has one A320 permanently based at the airport, which has allowed the carrier to open new routes to Pristina, Kutaisi (launched 18 June) and Tel Aviv. The result means that the airline now operates 42 routes from the UK airport with its largest (in terms of seats) being Budapest.
Wizz Air opened flights between Košice and Cologne Bonn on 25 June. The 1,040-kilometre sector will be served by the ULCC twice-weekly (Thursdays and Sundays). Seen cutting the ribbon at the launch are: Renata Lenartova, Vice-Mayor of Košice; Richard Rasi, Mayor of Košice; Michael Tmej, CEO Košice Airport; and Istvan Zacharias, VP of Košice Region. Flights to Tel Aviv were also launched from Košice this week.
A cake was made in Riga to toast the start of Wizz Air flights to Bari and Reykjavik/Keflavik. Seen posing with the cake, along with two crew members, are the airport’s Route Development Manager, Laura Audariņa, and Director Aviation Services and Business Development Department, Liene Freivalde. Both routes will be served by the carrier twice-weekly.

- Wizz Air this week opened its latest base at London Luton (LTN), its first hub in the UK and Western Europe. To coincide with the stationing of one A320 at Luton, Wizz Air opened new routes to Pristina (PRN) and Tel Aviv (TLV), while a route to Kutaisi was launched on 18 June. The carrier now serves 42 routes from the London airport this summer. Owain Jones, CCO at Wizz Air, said of the base opening: “We are proud to celebrate the opening of the first Wizz Air base in the UK at London Luton. Wizz Air’s very first flight in 2004 was to Luton and, since then, we have carried 30 million passengers on our low fare routes from the airport, stimulating the local tourism and aviation industries, while strengthening business partnerships between the UK and CEE.” Along with opening a new base at Luton, Wizz Air has also expanded its network from Riga (RIX) and Košice (KSC) this week, with both bases welcoming two routes each. Of the routes launched by Wizz Air over the past seven days, the average sector length is 2,191 kilometres. The link between Luton and Tel Aviv, which is the most heavily competed route launched by Wizz Air, will be flown by the ULCC four times weekly, while the remaining routes will see a twice-weekly rotation.
