LEVEL celebrates its inaugural services with its first flights to Los Angeles and Oakland.
LEVEL launched its first operations on 1 June with a route between Barcelona and Los Angeles. Posing with the carrier’s first aircraft at a press conference in Barcelona before the inaugural flight are: Javier Sanchez-Prierto, CEO of Vueling; Luis Gallego, CEO of Iberia; and Willie Wash, CEO of the IAG Group, along with part of the first flight crew.
- LEVEL, the new low-cost long-haul entity set-up by IAG, launched its first operations on 1 June. The carrier started its inaugural service with a 9,669-kilometre link between its Barcelona (BCN) hub and Los Angeles (LAX), a route it will initially operate twice-weekly (Thursdays and Sundays). The following day, Oakland (OAK) had the honour of becoming the airline’s second destination, with the 9,563-kilometre route being served three times weekly (Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays). Speaking at the launch, Willie Walsh, CEO of the IAG Group said: “This is the start of a fantastic new adventure for IAG. LEVEL’s sales are well ahead of the group’s expectations in all markets and the brand has resonated with a new audience, many of whom are flying long-haul for the first time. This is just the start – in 2018, LEVEL will increase its fleet to five aircraft and we are considering other European bases for the operation.” Initially the airline will operate two A330-200s which will be operated by Iberia, with LEVEL’s flights being flown under the Spanish flag carrier’s IB code. The transatlantic low-cost battle will be heating up this summer, particularly from Barcelona, as LCC rival Norwegian has also opened Los Angeles (launches 5 June) and Oakland (7 June) routes from Barcelona. Along with Los Angeles and Oakland, LEVEL will also serve Punta Cana (10 June) and Buenos Aires Ezeiza (17 June), with the latter meaning LEVEL will become the first European LCC to offer flights between Europe and South America, with the only other low-cost carrier in that market being Azul Airlines on its link between Sao Paulo Viracopos and Lisbon.
