A ribbon-cutting was also held in the Austrian city, presided over by: Wolfgang Vlasaty, MD Mobility cluster ACstyria; Jochen Schnadt, CCO bmi regional; Gerhard Widmann, MD Graz Airport; Christian Buchmann, Economic Development Council; and Wolfgang Malik, Chairman of the Board of Graz Municipal Services.
- bmi regional has reopened an operational base at Birmingham (BHX), with a twice-weekly (Mondays and Fridays) service initially, before increasing to four times weekly from next month, to Graz (GRZ) – the only direct flight from the UK to Austria’s second city. The UK regional airline last operated from the UK’s second largest city in March 2015, and its operations were a recent focus in an airline profile on anna.aero. Started on 27 February, the 1,370-kilometre city pair will be flown by the airline’s 49-seat ERJ 145 fleet, and faces no direct competition. The service to the Austrian city – bmi regional’s first destination in the country – will be joined later in the summer by six times weekly flights to Gothenburg (served during the airline’s last operations at Birmingham) and Nuremberg. Tom Screen, Head of Aviation Development at Birmingham Airport said: “We’re delighted with the launch of bmi regional’s Graz route today. With Birmingham being the only UK airport offering flights to Graz, we are filling a gap in the market for business and leisure travellers alike to take advantage of a city break in this vibrant destination. Furthermore we’re excited to welcome bmi regional back to Birmingham and look forward to our passengers enjoying the airline’s excellent service, efficiency and value.”
